Below you will find a list of common collocations used in The Common Tongue of the English language.  This is obviously not a complete list, and entries are made as they come up in my English classes.  Thus, the seemingly random selection of phrases.  The entries are added alphabetically by the noun or verb and not by the adjective or adverb which modifies them.

  • Good Idea – This is simply the most common collocation for an idea that is thought to be acceptable, favorable, and meets with approval

  • Meat Dish – This is the term we use for things like: Steaks and Roasts, and just about anything that is Beef or Pork (or any red meat), but usually not for things like turkey, chicken, duck, or any bird.

  • Clear Picture – This is a collocation that is used to mean:  a good understanding of something
  • Top Priority – Meaning:  “Most Important” Priority

  • Bulk Rates – This is a term used to describe when a company charges less for something that is purchased in large quantities or “Bulk”
  • Key Responsibilities – Meaning:  “Main”, “Primary”, “Most Important” Responsibilities
  • Repetitive Tasks – See:  “T”, for “Tasks”
